SOLDI don't make many panelled pipes, mostly because they are hard to make! I have so much respect towards pipe makers that are really good at panelled pipes, especially in a smooth finish. I do all my shaping on a flat disc, and it takes a steady hand to get the lines straight! The corrective shaping is done with hand files. Panel pipes take a lot of time, but it is well rewarding when the lines stay crisp and straight. This Octo-vat is made from a cross cut block of briar, and each panel exhibits slightly different grain. I chose a dark mahogany stain for this attractively shaped take on the traditional lovat. Hand cut black ebonite stem.
